In 16th century Spanish literary mythology, Calafia was a powerful black warrior queen on what was thought to be the island of California. Her journey took her through tyranny, war, love, and peace. Although her name was instrumental in the naming of the state of California, few know of this mystical character who rode atop a griffin and commanded an army of women.
Like Calafia's tale that was forgotten, tales featuring characters and author's from the fringes are often buried under the conventional and commonplace.
In her spirit, our goal is to offer Calafia Press as a publisher of the alternative journey in darkness and in light, in fantasy, reality, and that place just beyond.
